MARGHERITA MISSONI FOR ORPHANAID AFRICA (06/05/2008)

Margherita Missoni for OrphanAid Africa
Among the many charity organisations, why did you choose to give your support to OrphanAid Africa? What struck you about the project?

I’ve always been concerned with the problems facing children and five years ago, when Lisa Lovatt-Smith told me about her project in Ghana, I realized I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to help children in need. I was going through a period when I needed to figure out what was really important, and two weeks later I found myself in Ghana cutting out coloured paper masks. When I came back to Europe I decided to create OrphanAid Italy.

Africa is a land with incredible creative potential. Do you think that cultural and artistic learning are important elements in the education of African children?

I think it’s fundamental to help a continent like Africa to take advantage of its strengths, without encouraging a badly-made copy of the Western model. It’s important that children have the necessary tools to learn about and develop their own traditions, their art and music. During my stay in Ghana, four years ago, we invited musicians to teach music and dance to children; I’ll never forget that rare expression of fun and enjoyment on their faces.

Do you think it’s important that the Fashion world actively contributes to the problems of today’s society?

I think it’s important that everyone who is in the position to help— including those in the Fashion industry—should actively contribute to solving the problems of the world we live in, in whatever way they can.
