Campbell’s Souper Dress, 1967
A collector’s item and a staple of museum fashion collections from New York to Tokyo by way of New Zealand, this iconic paper dress exemplifies the “throwaway” culture of the youthful 60’s. Inspired by Andy Warhol’s repeat op art using the label from a soup tin, Campbell’s issued the Souper dress as a marketing tool, giving it away for two soup labels and $1. Demand was so high they stopped the promotion as they did not want to become clothing manufacturers! The fad for disposable fashion became obsolete after only a few years with the rise of the hippy movement and its concern for waste.
