It is with this spirit that Margherita Maccapani Missoni opens her world (and her wardrobe) to us. Historical pieces from the family maison, garments procured at flea markets, rare pearls and an endless love for fashion: the collection, original and unique, is now exclusively available on yoox.com. The proceeds of the sale of the items will be entirely donated to OrphanAid Africa, of which Margherita is Italian president.
Flames dancing in a rainbow of colors on a wintry overcoat; a sweater dress composed of swirling geometrics; a camisole flaunting all the shades of autumn—one look at their inventive stitching and the wonderful way they combine the sportif and the elegant, and you know the above items can only bear one label: Missoni.
It all began in 1958, when Tai and Rosita Missoni showed their first collection. The legendary Anna Piaggi was an early enthusiast, and soon the Missoni designs were gracing the covers of high-fashion magazines. There was even a delicious scandal: in 1967, when Missoni was invited to show at the prestigious Pitti Palace—it seemed that the models brassieres were visible beneath their gossamer Missoni tops, so Rosita told them to take them off! A great ruckus ensued, but it certainly didn’t do the brand any harm: in 1969, the Missonis met with Diana Vreeland who took one look at their handiwork and purportedly exclaimed, “Look! Who said that only colors exist? There are also tones!”
