MR & MRS JAGGER
AND IBIZA'S SUMMER OF LOVE
The Phoenicians landed first, the Romans invaded, but it was the free-spirited Hippies who truly claimed the sunny paradise of Ibiza, creating a summer of love that began in the 1960s. This was the golden era of Ibiza, where a gathering of like-minds and creative spirits such as Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan and Pink Floyd escaped the noise of the world to revel in its turquoise waters and limitless blue skies. A feisty woman named Bianca was also part of the Ibiza scene, accompanied by her new husband, the pouty Englishman Mick Jagger.
This was summer camp for grown-ups and a typical activity list would include all-night parties, art, nudity, music, moonlight swims, copious drugs and sex, often at the same time. But some of the most interesting things happened when the roaming bohemians had their clothes on. This was the birth of bohemian cool, a fusion of a down-to-earth hippie lifestyle and up-in-the clouds trust-fund glamour. Of course, Bianca and Mick had a style of their own, free-spirited and wild, but always unique. In the 1970s, at the height of Ibiza's hippie-chic, the designer Yves Saint Laurent based an entire collection on the island.
The Ibiza Summer of Love was memorable for many reasons and its participants went on to spread the love far and wide. Mick carried on as a super-stud rock god for another forty years (and is still going) and for Bianca, it was the beginning of a major transformation from sassy Socialite to Social Cause fighter. After an eight-year marriage to the flirtiest philanderer on Earth, Mrs Jagger decided to fashion her life on other things. She became a leading voice for the most vulnerable members of society, campaigning for human rights, civil liberties, peace, social justice and environmental protection throughout the world. She has received many prestigious international awards for her human rights and humanitarian work, including the Amnesty International USA Media Spotlight Award for Leadership. She is the Founder and Chair of the Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation, as well as a Council of Europe Goodwill Ambassador, and Member of the Executive Director's Leadership Council, Amnesty International, USA.
Fifty years after the golden era of Ibiza, Mick and Bianca are still sharing their Summer of Love with the world.
