About the artist
Michael Craig-Martin, born in Dublin in 1941, was educated at Yale University, where he studied Fine Art. His early work during the 1970s was influenced by philosophies of Minimalism, and Craig-Martin used household objects and materials to create his sculptures. During this period, and through the 1980s, he taught at Goldsmiths' College, London, where he exerted a considerable influence on his students: Julian Opie, Lisa Milroy, Ian Davenport, Gary Hume, Fiona Rae and Damien Hirst. In the 1990s his focus was directed towards painting, outlining shapes and motifs common to everyday life in lurid colors, in which his commitment to line drawing was - and is - articulated.
