About the work
Collision, Peter Blake 2009. Silkscreen print on Somerset tub-sized 400 gsm paper. Edition of 75. Signed, titled and numbered by the artist. This work comes from "The Venice Suite", a portfolio inspired by the artist's visit to the Venice Biennale in 2007.
About the artist
Often referred to as the Godfather of British Pop Art, Sir Peter Blake was born in 1932 in Dartford, Kent. He attended the Royal Collage of Art and in 1961 was awarded the John Moores junior art award for his work Self Portrait with Badges. Combining images of pop culture and fine art, his collages and paintings include imagery from advertisements, entertainment, wrestlers and the circus. One of his most infamous designs is the cover of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band for The Beatles, in 1967.
Blake became a Royal Academician in 1981, a CBE in 1983 and in 2002 Blake received a knighthood for his services to art. Retrospectives of Blake's work were held at the Tate in 1983 and Tate Liverpool in 2008. Most recently he curated the critically acclaimed show at the Museum of Everything in London in 2010, with his own very personal collection of art curios, taxidermy and memorabilia.
