About the work
SMS #1: Nancy Reitkopf, Luggage Labels, 1968 by Nancy Reitkopf. Decals. 2000-piece edition. 6 colorful decals depicting well-known historical disasters. The SMS Portfolios were a collaboration between William Copley & Dmitri Petrov which they published through their Letter Edged in Black Press, working with some of the most important artists of the twentieth century. The aim was to produce a new form of art journal that would bypass traditional institutions to distribute the artist's work directly to its audience instead.
About the artist
Nancy Reitkopf, born in the United States in 1938, is perhaps best known for creating the iconic ‘Luggage Labels’, featuring famous tragic historical events, from the sinking of the Titanic to Hiroshima. Her works were included in the SMS Portfolios (1968), a project published by The Letter Edged in Black Press, fruit of the collaboration between William Copley and Dmitri Petrov, in which the most important artists of the 20th century took part. The aim was to create a new type of art publication that bypassed traditional intermediaries and made artworks directly available to the public.
