About the artist
Marcel Duchamp Marcel Duchamp was a French artist whose work is most often associated with the Dadaist and Surrealist movements. Considered by some to be one of the most important artists of the 20th century, Duchamp's output influenced the development of post-World War I Western art. He advised modern art collectors, such as Peggy Guggenheim and other prominent figures, thereby helping to shape the tastes of Western art during this period. Following the sensation of one of his first pieces ‘Nude Descending a Staircase, No.2’, at the 1913 New York Armory Show, Marcel moved from Paris to New York to focus on his ‘readymades.’ These early works include ‘Bicycle Wheel’ (1913), a wheel mounted on a wooden stool and a urinal, titled ‘Fountain’ and signed 'R. Mutt.’ From 1915 to 1923 he worked on ‘The Bride Stripped Bare by her Bachelors, Even (The Large Glass)’, which is often considered his most important work. Duchamp went on to abandon art and devoted the rest of his life to chess. (1887 – 1968)
