About the artist
John Cage (1912-1992)
John Cage was an American composer, philosopher, writer and printmaker. According equal status to both structured sound and noise, he treated silence as an element in its own right. Cage produced his 4'33" (shortly after Robert Rauschenberg's ‘white canvases'), in which the performer(s) make no sounds but only delineate the work's three movements. Celebrated as one of the most influential American composers of the 20th century, he was also influential in the development of modern dance, through his association with choreographer Merce Cunningham.
