Born in 1902, Danish architect Arne Jacobsen sits between the avant-garde style of De Stijl and Bauhaus, and Scandinavian tradition, producing a stylistic result defined by great volumetric purity characterized by neat, exposed brick and wood surfaces, sloping roofs and small square windows. However, Jacobsen was also, and above all, one of the greatest designers of the century, perhaps recognized more by the world of industrial design than architecture. Jacobsen was in fact the original creator of the iconic chair composed of a contoured seat on thin metal legs: the archetype of the modern chair, based on which the famous three-legged, and then four-legged Ant Chair was designed, a fetish design object whose prototype is showcased at the MoMA in New York. However, with his array of experimental and varied talents, Jacobsen designed not only chairs, but also taps, wallpaper, lamps, dining and kitchen objects, cutlery, clocks and more, which are today produced by brands such as Rosenthal, Normann Copenhagen, Georg Jensen, &Tradition and Stelton.
