The more famous a name, the more difficult it is to discuss. You think you already know everything, but then you realise that there’s more, and every summary you compile seems inexorably simplistic. This is the case for great intellectuals and artists who have made history by making changes to paradigms that in turn have led to huge cultural shifts. One example is Vico Magistretti, a resounding name in the world of architecture and Italian design, whose exhaustive biography is simply impossible to summarise. So, let’s just say he studied with Gio Ponti and Ernesto Nathan Rogers, that alongside his father he contributed to reconstructing post-war Italy, and that he won every prize possible, including the Compasso d’Oro award in 1967 for his “Eclipse” lamp. It is precisely this object (one of the numerous items produced by Magistretti) that is a classic example of his unique style, defined as innovative and magical, yet understated (not through lack of decoration, but through lack of redundancy) allowing form to prevail over the idea and the concept. A great master whose works should be explored and, above all, enjoyed, even through the simple dimming of the light every night before bed.
