Photographer and artist Jack Pierson is renowned for an extensive body of works that include photographs, collages, word sculptures, installations, drawings and artist’s books. Born as an artist at the so-called Boston School of artists, a group of friends and colleagues, which included the likes Nan Goldin, who would photograph each other in everyday, casual situations, Jack Pierson went on to photograph famous celebrities, such as Naomi Campbell and Brad Pitt. But it’s perhaps his Word Sculptures, which he began creating in 1991, that better reflect the depth of this artist who, drawing on ordinariness, creates works rich in sorrow and fascination. Using mismatched letters salvaged from rubbish tips, or from the signs of old cinemas, closed-down restaurants, Las Vegas casinos and other abandoned establishments, Pierson creates sculptures that form single words or whole phrases, characterised by a bold visual impact and exceptional aesthetic refinement, evoking memories and nostalgia, as well as a sense of identity and absence.
