Massimo Bartolini
One of the most complex and articulate Italian artists on the scene today, Massimo Bartolini was born in 1962 in Cecina, where he lives and works, while his artistic training took place in Florence and Milan. Inspired by the provincial atmosphere of Italian towns and village festivals, Bartolini's oeuvre concentrates on the definition of threshold and landscape. Working with a wide range of media, from painting to sculpture and large installations, Bartolini models and redefines the idea of landscape, engaging with the space to create, through visual and poly-sensory experiences, places of reflection and contemplative hiding, where nature, too, is brought to centre stage. Internationally renowned, Massimo Bartolini has exhibited in prestigious venues including the MoMA PS1 in New York in 2001, three times at the Venice Biennale (1999, 2009 and 2013) and the Rome Quadriennale (1996, 2005 and 2008), at MAXXI in Rome in 2008 and at dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel in 2012.
