Thomas Grünfeld’s 2014 work, Untitled (Hau den Lukas / Blue), referring to the typical high striker game found at German festivals, is composed of a cushion and a mirror - a game of gazes in which the spectator sees himself and is seen - becoming a composite element through which the artist ironically explores domestic dimensions and a typically bourgeois taste for interior decor.
Thomas Grünfeld is a German artist born in 1956. He is most famous for his Misfits series of hybridized taxidermied animals that creates a fantastical and mythological zoology via the fusion of different animals into new beings, organic collages suspended between uneasiness and irony. Subverting the typically scientific nature of taxidermy, Grünfeld’s strange animals represent fictional creatures that evoke psychological struggles between reality and imagination and epic battles between good and evil. But his oeuvre is wide-ranging, articulate and complex. In addition to Misfits, he has produced another twelve bodies of works that include cushions, felt tapestries and photographs, as well as his characteristic and just as metaphysical resin eggs with beady glass eyes. Of Thomas Grünfeld’s various personal and collective exhibitions, Homey, his first major retrospective in an Italian museum at the Villa Croce Museum of Contemporary Art in Genoa in 2014, which collected works from 1986 to 2013, deserves a special mention.
