Originally presented in 1985 as part of the Zabro project for Zanotta, The Cuculia collection of bowls by architect and designer Alessandro Mendini is once again available exclusively from Characterised by its use of vivid colours the collection consists of 3 different bowls in varying dimensions with simple, almost ‘oriental’ silhouettes evoking traditional Japanese ceramics. The bowls are perfect as centrepieces, fruit bowls, serving dishes, or simply to create original and inspiring compositions mixing colour and form.
Alessandro Mendini is better described as an artist in a broader sense than strictly a designer, his research surpassing the simple idea of objects, seeking a subtle alchemy by which to transform pure thought into a tangible reality. It was Alessandro himself to affirm this vision, defining himself as “a designer who applies typical artistic methods to architecture and design” or rather “a painter who uses typical design methods to paint” in search of “free large spaces in which to work”. Considered one of the world’s greatest contemporary designers, Mendini was amongst the protagonists of the vanguards of Radical Design, and amongst the founders of post-modern design. Creator of great works such as the famous Poltrona di Proust, a homage to the literary genius based on a Baroque-style armchair, which he stumbled across by chance and decorated by hand, Mendini has collaborated with the likes of Alessi, Bisazza, Kartell, Swatch, Venini and Zanotta, and his works are showcased in the collections of museums of the calibre of the MoMA in New York and the Pompidou Centre in Paris.
