Levi Strauss & Co. was founded in the US in 1853 by Levi Strauss, an immigrant originally from Bavaria. Although Levi Strauss produced resistant work pants, modern jeans did not appear until the '20s. Levi’s, the company’s main brand, was invented in 1873, and eventually would include the legendary 501 jeans. In 2007 Levi’s made its entry into the organic cotton market, introducing a new line made with 100% certified organic cotton with the trademark “Levi’s®Eco”. Items feature coconut and non-galvanized metal buttons and finishing with natural products. The line’s production process has received “EKO Sustainable Textile” certification from the Control Union Certification.
