Giant grater for cheese or nutmeg. The perfect dose for a single plate can be achieved with just one grate. Inspired by the personal grating habits of Richard Sapper, who at home must grate cheese for his whole life.
Richard Sapper was one of the designers to have contributed the most to the definition of the form and functionality of everyday life of the last fifty years. After studying engineering and economics in Munich, his native city, and after a short period at Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart, Sapper moved to Milan, his adoptive city. There, he began working at Gio Ponti’s studio, where he designed the Static table clock for Lorenz, which won him the first of his eleven Compasso d’Oro awards. The rest is a long story of successes that would go on to accompany the evolution of contemporary aesthetics through extraordinary designs, from those born out of his symbiotic collaboration with Marco Zanuso, such as the Cube radio and the Algol television for Brionvega, and the Grillo telephone for Siemens, to masterpieces like the Tizio table lamp for Artemide, a top-selling cult item of the eighties, and the pioneering laptops for IBM that we still use today. A designer amongst the greatest, whose creations resist the passing of time, which, as he once said “is one of the few things that can define the quality of an object.”
