The elegant, twisting shape of this steel vase could not but be the work of deconstructivist genius Zaha Hadid, one of the foremost figures of contemporary architecture.
Born and raised in an open and progressive Iraq, completing her studies in Beirut and later becoming a naturalized British citizen, Zaha Hadid was one of the greatest architects of our time, as well as the first woman to receive a prestigious Prizer Prize and to be awarded a Royal Gold Medal for architecture by the Royal Institute of British Architects. Working with colleagues in the realms of Frank O. Gehry, Daniel Libeskind and Rem Koolhaas, Zaha Hadid was a protagonist in deconstructivism, i.e. the idea of “non-architecture” that refutes the principles of Euclidean geometry to create irregular shapes of its own creation, by way of soft, curved structures achieved through the use of innovative technology and materials. Zaha Hadid’s style is fluid, harmonious and immediately recognizable, and it is upon this that she constructed her career as a starchitect, working in fashion and design, as well as architecture, creating objects defined by sinuous and effortlessly elegant lines. An iconic figure who will be remembered for her extraordinary talent and women's empowerment, because when Gae Aulenti said that architecture is a man’s craft, Zaha Hadid simply pretended not to hear.
