The iconic series designed by Alvar Aalto was first presented at the Paris World Exhibition in 1937. Ever since then the mysterious and hypnotic forms of this design cult have never lost their appeal.
Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, one of the greatest architects of the twentieth century, was amongst the fathers of the Modern Movement, alongside Le Corbusier, Lloyd Wright, Gropius and Van der Rohe. Active in his own country and in the United States, where he taught at the MIT, he moved away from rationalism, transcending its rigid boundaries through his genius use of natural materials, namely wood, in order to create curved lines and surfaces and a profound relationship between buildings and our surroundings. An astounding human being, boasting a great sense of pragmatism and culture, Aalto considered all aspects of planning, from urban elements to architecture and design, connecting each and every one to form a unique organic organism. Probably the most famous Scandinavian design piece in the world, the shape of the Aalto Vase is inspired by the ocean's waves: organic, simple and sinuous. Awarded first prize at the design competition held by the Karhula–Iittala glassworks in 1936, the Aalto Vase is a revolutionary, unique object, just like the work and life of its creator.
