Balenciaga was established back in 1917, when Spanish tailor Cristóbal Balenciaga opened his boutique in San Sebastián. His designs rapidly won over the Spanish noblewomen and the royal family, who appreciated the fact that his garments could enhance any type of silhouette. Due to the Spanish Civil War, Balenciaga left Spain and re-established himself in Paris, where he became famous worldwide, so much so that Christian Dior considered him a master and an inspiration for a whole generation of designers. Nowadays, Balenciaga no longer focuses on elegant clothing only: the brand also caters to those who prefer a more urban style, wearing sweatshirts and T-shirts.
