Guess was conceived in the 1980s by the Marciano brothers, whose family owned small clothing shops in various locations in the south of France. During a trip to California, the brothers realized that jeans for both men and women were all the same, with the only small differences being in the rear pockets. And so they had the groundbreaking idea to revamp the way denim was worn. In 1981, the company opened in Los Angeles and started selling its first stonewashed jeans, worn out on purpose to make them softer and featuring the “bleached” tones that would become the brand’s trademark.
