Memphis Milano
Memphis: the native city of Elvis Presley and the capital of Ancient Egypt. An ironic yet casual juxtaposition, named after a Bob Dylan record many years ago and one of the most effervescent groups in the history of post-futuristic Italian design. Memphis is synonymous with audacity, irony, challenge, renovation and fun, above all for the end user. Founded in 1981 by the talented Ettore Sottsass, alongside Michele de Lucchi, Aldo Cibic, Matteo Thun, Marco Zanini and Martine Bedin, Memphis has collaborated with big names such as Peter Shire, Shiro Kuramata, and Nathalie du Pasquier. Adopting an aggressive style that moved away from the minimalist anonymity of the previous decade, the group became leader in post-modern design, officially disbanding in 1988. Asymmetrical silhouettes, vibrant and clashing colours, daring constructions, animal prints and glossy plastics: Memphis marked the start of an era and continues tirelessly to draw in new proselytes and admirers.
