Alex Katz
Alex Katz, born in Brooklyn in 1927 to Russian parents, is considered one of the absolute masters of American Realism and has inspired generations of artists throughout his career. One of a few who can boast a personal room at the MOMA in New York, Katz is the artist who best bridges the gap between figurative painting and Pop art. Reacting to conceptual art and Dada, and opposing the Informalism and action painting of his early days, Katz brought painting back to the classical tradition with portraits and landscapes. But he brought it back with his inimitable flat colours, monochrome backgrounds and quick brushstrokes, anticipating Pop Art and preserving the expressive power of the American abstract movement. Created by a master of the large-scale format and a poet of everyday life, Katz’s works grant us, in his unmistakable style, a catalogue of places and people who left their mark on his life.
